Why There Are No Elementary and Secondary School Rankings in Canada After 2020?

2023-02-16

In Canada, at least there are two organizations or companies that research and rank elementary and secondary schools.

Fraser Institute uses average scores on province-wide tests (eg: annual math and literacy tests) to rank schools. University Magazine ranks schools based on graduation rate, college acceptance rate, academic reputation and student satisfaction.

However, both Fraser Institute and University Magazine only provided the latest rankings for 2019-2020, there are no more new reports after 2020.

Here is Ontario Secondary School Rankings 2020

Why There Are No Elementary and Secondary School Rankings in Canada After 2020?

There is no any definitive answer to why those two Elementary and Secondary School Rankings providers stopped the ranking reports.

But there are some possible reasons:

  • The ranking is controversial and criticized for its methodology, bias and impact on public education. (check here)
  • The ranking may have a negative impact on public education by undermining public confidence, promoting privatization and reducing funding
  • The ranking is based on provincial tests that may have been disrupted or cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The ranking is not a priority or a core service of their services.
  • The ranking is based on standardized tests that may not reflect the full range of students' talents, abilities and needs
  • The ranking does not account for socio-economic factors that could affect test scores, such as poverty, immigration status, special needs and language barriers.
  • The ranking may create a false sense of competition among schools and pressure on teachers and students to perform well on tests.
