Understand Ontario Course Code
There is a six-character code for every course in an Ontario Secondary School, such as MPM2D, ENG2D..etc.
The first letter represents the course's department area:
- A=Arts
- B=Business
- C=Canadian and World Studies
- E=English
- F=French
- G=Guidance and Career Education
- H=Humanities and Social Sciences
- L=International Languages
- M=Mathematics
- P=Physical Education
- S=Sciences
- T=Technology
The first 3 letters indentify course subject. For example: ENG = English, MPM = Principles of Mathematics
The 4th character is a number:
- 1 = Grade9
- 2 = Grade10
- 3 = Grade11
- 4 = Grade12
The 5th character is a letter, which is for course type:
Grade 9 and 10
- D=Academic
- P=Applied
- L=Locally dDeveloped
- O=Open
Grade 11 and 12
- C=College
- E=Workplace
- M=University/College
- O=Open
- U=University
The 6th character is normally a number, which is for school boards to distinguish a couse program. But it could be a letter too.
So, here are several courses below:
MPM2D1 = grade 10 Principles of Mathematics, Acadamic type;
ENG2D1 = grade 10 English, Acadamic type;
TGJ2O1 = grade 10 Communications Technology, Open type;
AWM2OP = grade 10 Visual Arts Drawing and Painting;
AVI2OP = grade 10 Visual Arts;
CHV2OP = grade 10 Civics and Citizenship;
CHC2D1 = grade 10 Canadian History since World War I, Acadamic type;
AMG2O1 = grade 10 Guitar Music
SNC2D1 = grade 10 Science, Acadamic type;
